Aliquippa Students Power Up on STEAM

The AES STEAM-Walk drew 32 students from grades 4, 5, & 6 for a fun-filled morning of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics on May 11, 2018. Each student received an AES STEAM Walk cinch sacks to carry their many gifts and projects they created throughout the day. Stations included projects from creating polymers to wiring up circuit boards to spacewalking and even included a station on "powering up" with proper nutrition. Thanks to a grant from the Beaver County Educational Trust and help from Covestro, Carnegie Science Center and the Education Partnership the teachers of AES put on an excellent program enjoyed by all. Ambridge Science Dynamic Duo Bring the STEAM to Families

  [caption id="attachment_1122" align="alignright" width="300"] Jr high students explain the use of a compound microscope[/caption] Science teachers, Don Ayers and Brad Olenic, bill their STEAM-Walk in Ambridge as a wholesome family experience. Families from the district were invited to bring their little ones, ages 6 - 10, to the Ambridge Jr High to partake in an evening of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.   Enlisting the help of Ambridge junior high school students, 8 unique stations were created to introduce different facets of basic STEAM disciplines. From polymers, to shipwreck survival engineering, to helicopter balloons, participating kids got to see, touch and think about how their world works and the tools we use to understand it. [caption id="attachment_1111" align="alignright" width="300"] Highland Middle School students try to breakout the information inside the kit[/caption] Ambridge Area School District's k-6 STEAM educator, Nicole Darroch, was awarded a Great Ideas Mini-Grant for $500 that allowed her to purchase four 'Breakout' EDU kits for use in her classroom. The students work together to figure out how to open the 'breakout' box and discover the information inside. With each success comes a small internal box that must also be opened, much like nested Russian dolls. The "Coming Together for Education" dinner was held last night at Shadow Lakes Country Club from 6pm-8pm with over 170 in attendance. And in a major success, the event was able to attract the attention of the PA Department of Education, which sent, Dr. David Volkman, the Executive Deputy Secretary to be the keynote speaker. Dr. Volkman spoke about the administration's PAsmart proposal, which is an effort to refocus Pennsylvania schools on student preparedness to enter the economy of tomorrow, today.
